Description | Mounjaro is an innovative medication for weight loss and the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is used as a so-called "weight loss injection." Below, you will learn more about how it works, how it is used, and how it differs from other medications such as Wegovy. What is Mounjaro? Mounjaro is a medication containing the active ingredient tirzepatide, originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a new class of substances: dual-acting GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonists. GIP and GLP-1 are hormones released in the intestine after eating. Unlike the active ingredient semaglutide (contained in Ozempic or Wegovy), tirzepatide not only activates the GLP-1 receptor but also the GIP receptor. This receptor is also involved in glucose and energy metabolism. Mounjaro was initially approved for the treatment of diabetes, but studies have shown a strong effect on body weight—even more so than semaglutide. Therefore, it is approved for the treatment of obesity in many countries. See also: PhenQ vs Mounjaro for weight loss on this page. How does the drug work? Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, acts via two hormone receptors: GLP-1 receptor: promotes insulin release in the presence of elevated blood sugar, inhibits glucose production in the liver, delays gastric emptying, and reduces hunger. GIP receptor (glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide): enhances insulin action, suppresses appetite, and can have an additional effect on adipose tissue and energy expenditure. This combined effect increases the feeling of satiety and reduces calorie intake. Tirzepatide works over a week—so one weekly injection is sufficient. |
